March 9th is Get Over It Day.  What do you have to get over?

"You cannot truly move forward if you are always looking back."

-Anonymous

March 9th is "Get Over It Day," one of those lesser known holidays that I feel we all need to know about and embrace. It was conceived by Jeff Goldbatt, an Atlanta-based entrepreneur.  In 2005 Jeff found himself taking longer than he thought was reasonable to get over an ex-girlfriend.  So the "Get Over It" concept came to his mind.  Jeff selected March 9, the exact midpoint between Valentine's Day and April Fool's Day, for this unusual, but very much needed, holiday.

Insights About Valentine's Day

"What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It's the only thing that there's just too little of." - Song lyrics from "What The World Needs Now"

With Valentine's Day being just around the corner, I decided to ask Dr. Torri L. Griffin, LPC, a Love and Relationships Coach, to share with us her thoughts about this special day. To read Dr. Griffin's insights.

An Exciting & Insightful Activity for You!

"The unexamined life is not worth living"   - Socrates -

I was first introduced to the above quote by Socrates years ago when I was taking a philosophy class in college.  It has stayed in my mind ever since that time.

What thoughts come to your mind as you read "The unexamined life is not worth living?" At first glance it could sound morbid, depressing, or possibly discouraging. However, I found the quote challenged me to examine my life on a regular basis to gain a better understanding of myself, my life experiences, and my impact on others. Read about the activity based on the quote by Socrates.

Beat The Holiday Blues

Happiness is not a matter of events. It depends upon the tides of the mind.

- Alice Meynell -

During the holidays, many people find themselves experiencing sadness, disappointment, or depression. These emotions can last for a fleeting moment or for an extended period of time. Some causes for this discontent include financial stresses, family tensions, too much to do, expecting "everything to be perfect," the pressure to be joyous, and, a big one for many people - a heightened sense of loneliness. However, these causes do not have to result in having "the holiday blues." Here are 12 ways to lessen those unhappy feelings, whether momentarily or longer, so you can enjoy this time of year.

Have a Stress-Less Holiday

Wouldn't it be great if you, your family, and friends had a holiday filled with festive occasions instead of frustrating ones --- delightful events instead of difficult times --- memories of cherished moments instead of challenging encounters?  Well, it is possible if you follow ten tips for having a stress-less holiday.

Who Needs Networking?

More business decisions occur over lunch and dinner than at any other time, yet no MBA courses are given on the subject."

Peter Drucker, International  Management Consultant

The answer to the question of "Who Needs Networking?" is very simple - everyone, particularly in these financially challenging, uncertain and ever-changing times.  Our ability to connect with people and build a network of support is key to our success in finding employment, maintaining or growing our businesses, as well as staying encouraged and motivated to move forward on our personal and professional endeavors.  Read on.

STOP = Stop Treating Others Poorly

All of life is about working with and through other people.  There is no

success that you can obtain, sustain, or maintain by yourself, on your

own, or in a vacuum.   -George C. Fraser

I have found the above quote to be very true.  Regardless of the types of goals and successes I have been able to achieve, other people have always played a role in some way in my being able to reach them.

Some time ago my niece, Imani, and I created a clever acronym which I keep in mind when interacting with people.  We were driving to Six Flags Amusement Park in Atlanta and I thought of a game that we played route. It was making up acronyms (only a motivational speaker, like myself, would come up with something like that and think of it as being fun!). We thought of several good ones. But one was really great - STOP = Stop Treating Others Poorly. By poorly we meant being inconsiderate, selfish, and unhelpful. Read on.

Discover Your Passions, Gift & Talents

Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.

- Georg Hegel -  (1770-1831)

The above quote makes many people feel frustrated or confused because they do not know what they are passionate about doing. Such individuals often ask me if I believe we all have gifts, talents, and passions.  I tell them "yes" and then explain that they can find them in either their past, present, or future.  If you feel like they do, then you will definitely want to continue reading to find out how to discover your passions.  Read on.

Pursue Your Passion - Insights From Joanne Smith

Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.
- Georg Hegel -  (1770-1831)

The above quote reminds me of Joanne Smith. She is passionate about singing and is accomplishing great things because of it.  I hope this article inspires you to pursue your passion.  Read on.

Keep It Positive - K.I.P.

Being positive is one of the great traits to have in life.  Research shows it has many health, work, and social benefits.  One could easily say “it pays to be positive."  However, it is one thing to say you are or want to be a positive person and another to actually be that way on a consistent basis.  Read on to find out my 12 ways to ”Keep It Positive” – K.I.P.

Set & Write Your Goals

If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, they will take you places that will amaze you.

- Les Brown -

You may already know about the importance of goal setting and have read or heard about the Harvard Study on the subject.  If so, the significance of the findings justifies my citing the research.  However, if you are not familiar with this study, I am sure you will find it fascinating. Read on about the study as well as how to set and achieve goals.

Create a Vision Board & Create Greater Success

Vision boards are also known as treasure maps, success boards, and life maps. Regardless of the name, it is a collection of pictures, slogans and words which represent what you want to see happen in your future and would make you successful? It could be one year, five years or ten years from now. I think of a vision board as a visual representation of your goals and dreams.                   To read the entire article.

Happiness is a Decision

Happiness is not a matter of events.  It depends upon the tides of the mind.

- Alice Meynell -

You have probably heard it before, but happiness is a choice.  It is not so much a result of circumstances beyond your control as a conscious decision to be happy.  This concept may be difficult to understand because commercials are always advertising that if we buy certain products or services, we will be happier.  Songs are telling us that if we just find the right person, our days will be filled with never-ending bliss.  Magazines are filled with articles explaining how, if we get the right job or start the right business, we can be happier individuals.  While these things can certainly add to our feelings of well-being, happiness actually begins with our internal state of mind.  Read on.

Expectation Drives Realization

He who does not expect a million readers, should not write a line.

- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe - (1749 – 1832)

According to Goethe’s quote, if we are not planning to do something in a big way, we shouldn’t do it at all.  This idea is very challenging for many of us because many times we have been taught not to expect big successes in life.  So we make comments like: “I'm going to write this little book" or “start this little business."  We apply for jobs that we can easily get even though they are not the ones we truly want.  We believe that if we lower our expectations then we can avoid the disappointment of failure and increase our chances of success.  But what we are really doing is setting a limit on what we will achieve  For entire article.

More Than One Chance

I've never quite believed one chance is all I get.
- Anne Tyler -

The above quote is one of the most hope-filled statements I have ever heard.  Unfortunately, many people feel just the opposite.  They believe that you either get only one chance or a limited number of chances at what you want in life.  And that is far from true.  Read full article.

Overcoming Obstacles

“Is it a temporary obstacle to your dreams and goals or a permanent one?  The choice is yours.”

 - Donna Satchell -

I was temporarily speechless when I heard my name announced as a winner at the 2008 Twinkie Awards at the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia on June 14.  This annual show honors small business creativity and excellence.

I won the category of "Best Motivational Speaker in 5 Minutes or Less”.  I was at
a loss for words because the other three contestants were all outstanding. Plus, I remembered losing in 2007, when I was certain I had presented a winning speech. That previous defeat was a major disappointment for me at the time. However, after giving the outcome a great deal of thought, I decided it would not stop me from trying again in 2008.  Read on to find out the seven steps I used to get motivated to compete in this year's contest.

An Attitude of Gratitude

The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.

- Eric Hoffer -

Gratefulness, appreciation, and thankfulness are all synonyms for a feeling of gratitude.  But what is gratitude?  It is recognizing that what you have, what you were given, or what you have experienced has value.  Gratitude is easy to express when things are going well.  For instance, when you win the lottery, are selected to the college of your choice, or receive a promotion with a huge salary increase, you naturally feel thankful.  Read on.

Learning is a Continual Process

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be
those who cannot read and write, but those

who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
- Alvin Toffler -

Education ... it’s not just for youngsters any more.  Learning should be a continual process.  After leaving school, many people mistakenly believe that they have acquired all they need to know.  However, in order to succeed in today's fast-paced competitive world we must be committed to becoming life-long students.   We need to look at our lives and decide what knowledge we’ll need to move from where we are today to where we want to be tomorrow.  Also, when change comes our way, whether personal or professional, we have to be ready to grasp the knowledge and skills necessary to adjust to our new situation or environment.  Read full article.
