Gees Bend Quilters (January 5th)
For generations women in Gees Bend, a poor rural town in Alabama, have been making quilts to keep themselves and their families warm. They stitched stories of the lives into their quilts. In 1998 William Arnett, an art collector, discovered the Gee's Bend quilters while working on history of African-American art forms. He was so overwhelmed by the women's articity and originality that he introduced them and their quilts to the art world.
